Connaught Cemetery is about two hundred yards in front of the Schwaben Redoubt - the main German fortification at this point in the line. It is easy to understand why it was so difficult to get help to the men who initially captured part of the Schwaben Redoubt. Machine guns fired down no mans land from the redoubt and from Thiepval village. It was impossible to cross. Eventually the Ulsters were relieved of their gains by continual German counter-attacks. They suffered 5,000 casualties and won four VC's.

Back to the car, now, and continue on towards the village of Thiepval. After 1/2 mile you come to a cross roads - turn right onto the D151, signposted 2k to Authuille, 7k to Albert.
