After a while the high banks alongside the road minimize and the road is level with the fields. Look over to the right and, just beyond a patch of woodland, can be seen the village of Maricourt. Looking ahead and slightly to the right is the village of Montauban. It was captured on 1st July. Maricourt is where the British lines ended and the French took over. It is in this area, just to your right, that Capt. Nevill and his men started kicking the footballs towards the German lines. As far as I am aware, none of the footballs reached the German trenches and Captain Nevill, certainly, was killed in the attempt.
This road now leads to Montauban. Look over to the right, past Maricourt and you will see the Maricourt woods where the French army linked up with the British. After 1/2 mile we reach Montauban and join the D64 - called the Grand Rue - it is the main road through the village - the sign is on a house just to your right. Drive past the village church on your left and about 300 yards past that you will see CWGC signs. Take the left turn here towards Quarry Cemetery. British troops reached this area on 1st July and, having no further orders, they ceased their advance. They looked down into the valley and watched German troops retreating, dragging their guns with them. On the horizon, ahead and slightly to the right is High Wood and to the right of that is the village of Longueval and Deville Wood. This road is called the rue de Brasseurs.
