MONTAUBAN

Carry on now and at the foot of the valley is Quarry Cemetery containing 735 burials. Many graves are those of men killed in the 14th July attacks. About 1 1/2 miles from Montauban you come to a T-junction. Stop here and just in front of you you can see a metal crucifix - an original one that was here during the battle - it still bears visible scars.

Turn left now and head for Bazentin le Petit. This is the scene of the British attack on the night of 13/14th July 1916 which ousted the Germans from their 2nd line. The field on your left, after 14 July, contained British field guns dug in along the edge of the road firing into the village of Longueval. Ahead and to the left is Bazentin le Grand Wood and further ahead and to the right is Bazentin le Petit Wood.

You come to a fork in the road - turn left (signposted Contalmaison D20) but beware priority to the right. Very soon there is a cross roads sign. Turn left at the cross roads - signposted to Flat Iron Copse Cemetery. Just here were some of the German second line trenches including Flat Iron Trench - captured on 14th July. After about 1/3 mile you arrive at the cemetery with Flat Iron Copse on its left and up behind it is Mametz Wood.
