LONGUEVAL

The 47th London Division Cemetery contains over 7.000 graves of which well over half are unidentified. Many bodies were still being found up to and even after World War Two and this cemetery was used for many of them. After this cemetery continue up the road with High Wood on your left. You will come to a memorial just on the edge of the wood, to the 47th London Division, recently rebuilt after its foundations subsided into an old shell hole or trench line.

At the end of High Wood, stop. This was the corner at which the cavalry charge of 15 July 1916 was headed. Look to the right of Longueval village, which is ahead of you and you will see a cemetery. The cavalry charge came from between the village and that cemetery, heading straight towards where you are now. The German machine guns stopped the charge, although a few riders made it to the edge here but probably didn't make the return journey. At this corner turn left along the edge of the wood.
