POZIERES

After leaving the Memorial carry on towards Bapaume and after about .5km you enter the outskirts of Pozieres village. Just as you enter the village there is a signpost directing you left to the Australian 1st Division Memorial. Turn left here and directly on your right are the ruined remains of a German bunker system known as 'Gibraltar House'.

Gibraltar House (or Fort Gibraltar)

Pozieres was originally an objective of the 1st July (by the 8th Division attacking from Ovillers). It was not until 25th July that the ruined village was finally occupied by the 1st Australian Division. The 2nd Australian Division completed the action by capturing the north end of the village where it is at its highest point (of the whole Somme battlefield). There was once a windmill at this place and it was here that the Australians chose to put a simple memorial.
