The Canadian Memorial Park, on the left of the main road, was designed like all the Canadian national memorials on the Western Front . It has a central granite block, inscribed in English and French. Nearby is Coucelette British Cemetery. It was originally made towards the end of 1916 and had just 74 graves. There are now 1956 graves, most of then brought in after the war
This sector was taken over by the Canadians, from the Australians, in early September 1916 and were here until the end of the Somme battles in Novembr 1916. The village of Courcellette was captured in mid-September, with the aid of some of the first tanks to be used. |
