Goodwin Thompson Video

have re-issued their 1989 video film of THE SOMME BATTLEFIELDS (now on DVD, see below)

Filmed by John Thompson and Paul Goodwin, this film, a comprehensive guided tour, shows a unique view of the battlefields before the influx of new memorials. It covers the ground from Fonquevillers, in the north, to Maricourt in the south. The 1st of July 1916 battles are covered in depth and also the later battles of:

  • Pozieres
  • Longueval
  • Montauban
  • Delville Wood
  • Guillemont
  • Beaumont Hamel
  • Butte de Warlencourt

QUICKTIME REVIEWS

Priced at only £6.50 (DVD), including p & p, this 1 hour and 53 minute long film should be part of any collectors' library. The film was originally edited on domestic equipment, sold several thousand copies and received glowing testimonials. Available in VHS tape and DVD-R (The DVD is 113 minutes long, as was the original on VHS tape. Because of deterioration in the VHS master tape, there is a minor problem with the first 14 minutes of the film. There are several small white flashes on the screen during this first 14 minutes but thereafter the quality is as good as the original tape. There are one or two colour bandings that occur from time to time but this is due to it being copied from old analogue camcorder film way back in 1989. The sound and colours have copied very successfully.
I can recommend the film and considering that only 12% of it has the white flash problem (all of it at the beginning), I think you will enjoy it.
